:
Training in Online Weed Reporting with BAEDN
Time: 7-8:30PM
Location:
Gualala Community Center
Fee:
none for attendance, $10 (possibly less) per laptop for internet use during workshop
Description:
In Sonoma County, funding for rapid-response invasive weed treatment
(eradication of small frontier and outlier populations of invasive weeds) is
linked to an online weed reporting system called the Bay Area Early Detection Network
or BAEDN, hosted by Calflora.
The goal of this workshop is to train a cadre of weed reporters in northwestern
Sonoma County in the use of BAEDN, so new weed infestations can be dealt with
BEFORE they become an ecological nightmare- like broom and jubatagrass. There is no fee for workshop attendance.
The easy-to-use online form has five required fields:
- Scientific name
- Identification method
- Observer
- Observation Date
- Location
and many more optional fields.
Participants will learn how to correctly gather and enter information in
required and optional fields. Further, we will explore the other tools and
features of the website, including links to Calflora species descriptions and
observation records, use of the dynamic species distribution maps, linking photos to
your reports and more.
Wireless internet service is available at the Gualala Community Center for a fee (normally $10 per person, but we are requesting a discount for the Weed Reporting workshop). If you would like to follow the presentation online and practice entering a plant observation, you may bring your wireless-enabled laptop to the workshop. A credit or debit card is required to pay the fee online.
To participate online during the workshop, it is recommended that you
register as a contributor with Calflora
(free for non-professionals) BEFORE the workshop because an email activation is required.
